Paul Erdős and His Mathematics Budapest, July 4-11, 1999.

Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest V., Roosevelt tér 9. (Roosevelt square 9)

It is a great honour that we have the opportunity to hold our conference in the newly renovated, splendid, historical building of the Academy. You can see pictures of the building and the conference rooms on our homepage at http://www.math-inst.hu/~erdos99

All participants are kindly requested to register at the Conference Reception Desk in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The Reception Desk employs a multilingual staff and will be open throughout the conference with the following hours: from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on July 4th, 1999, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on July 5th and during the working hours of the conference on all other days. Participants will receive a complete set of conference documents, a name badge and the "Participants Pack" including other documentation and information. Participants are kindly requested to wear their badges when attending professional and social activities. All sessions of the ``Paul Erdős and his Mathematics'' conference will be held in the building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Roosevelt sq. 9., District V.)

The opening ceremony will be held on July 5th at 9.00 a.m.

Plenary lectures will take place in the mornings from Monday to Friday. Thirty minute talks in five parallel sessions will be given in the afternoons from Monday to Friday and on Saturday morning, with the exception of Wednesday afternoon. The scientific program of the conference ends on Saturday, July 10, before 2 P.M. The detailed program can be downloaded from our homepage (http://www.math-inst.hu/~erdos99).

A Poster Session is planned for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 12:00 to 14:00. All participants will have the opportunity to present their mathematical work in the form of a Poster -- provided they have indicated their intention to do so before the start of the conference (via e-mail), they have submitted an abstract or at least a title by Saturday, July 3rd 24:00pm and their contribution has been accepted by the Scientific Committee. Only one poster is allowed per member. Authors are asked to send us their name, the title and the approximate category of the topic of their poster (say Analysis, Combinatorics, Number Theory, Probability Theory and Set Theory) in order to allow us to make the correct schedule. Send the requested information to Laszlo Szekely:

Each Poster Session is 120 minutes long, during which period the authors should stand by their posters and be available for questions and discussion. Authors presenting a poster are advised to bring the material of the poster with them when they come to the Conference since no facilities for preparing posters are available on site. Because of the large number of applicants we have to limit the size of posters to TWO A3-size pages (40 x 60 cm; 17' x 24'). The contributors of the poster session will receive a schedule of their presentation at registration.

The Welcome Party will be held on July 4th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the conference site. A boat cruise is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7th. The Conference Banquet will take place on Thursday , July 8th, from 7:30 p.m. Information booklets listing optional cultural programs and excursions will be available at the registration desk. This information will also be posted on our web page. The registration staff will be happy to assist anyone in choosing additional programs.

If you wish to make international calls we advise you to buy a telephone card (120 units costs 1800 forints, 50 units 800 forints). Card operated phones can be found all over the city. When making calls abroad, first dial 00, then at the long distance dial tone dial the country code, area code and phone number.

There are two on-site possibilities for lunch. Full course lunches are available at the Club of the Academy for HUF 1500/day. Tickets will be sold at registration. Because of the limited size of the Club, participants wishing to use this service should notify us in advance via e-mail at khajos@office.mta.hu Light lunches (sandwiches) will also be offered for HUF 450/day. Complementary coffee, refreshments and small cakes will be served during intervals. Also, the "Participants Package" will include a map showing nearby restaurants.

An electronic communication service will be provided during the conference for participants and accompanying members (telnet only). However, only FIVE terminals could be put up, so please use this service only when extremely urgent.

Accompanying members are welcome at all social programs and are invited to visit the Picture Gallery of the Academy, located in the main building. The Registration Staff will also be happy to organize further optional program.

We highly recommend the services of the Airport Minibus Company, organized on a car-pool principle, rather than taxis. It costs HUF 1200/person from the Airport to anywhere in Budapest, and for HUF 2000 one can buy a return ticket valid for 3 months. You will have no difficulty finding their representative upon arrival. An airport shuttle bus is available to the city center. Using public transportation you can reach the nearest metro station (the final stop of the blue line, station Kobanya-Kispest) from the airport by taking bus number 93(red number). "Taxi 2000" has a service HUF 2400/cab from the airport to anywhere in Budapest. If you decide to take a taxi we strongly advise you to check the price in advance as foreigners are often taken advantage of. Car rental services are available at the airport and all major hotels.

Public transportation is fast and efficient in Budapest. Weekly tickets, which cost Huf 1750 can be bought at major stations, which are valid on all buses, trams, trolley buses and metro lines in Budapest. One ticket costs 90 forints, a block of tickets: 10 for 810 forints. Since a number of reconstruction projects are going on in the city coinciding with the Erdős Conference participants are advised to rely on directions provided at the Conference Reception Desk or their hotels in addition to their maps. The Conference Site is in Pest, at one end of Lánchíd (Chainbridge). It is at an about 10 min. walk from the Vörösmarty tér station (the final stop) of the yellow metro line. If you take the red metro line to the Conference Site, you should get off at Kossuth tér and change to tram No. 2 for one stop (or take a 15 min. walk). Taking the blue metro line one should get off at Deák tér and walk about 10 min. Note that Deák tér is a station on all three metro lines. >From Buda one should take bus No 105 or No 16, which stops near to Roosevelt tér, or bus No. 7 across Erzsébet híd (Elisabeth bridge) and then walk or take tram No. 2 for two stops. Maps showing the suggested routes between hotels and the conference site will be put up on our homepage. Taxis: All taxis must have a working taximeter and taxi drivers are compelled to give an official printed receipt (fare costs approx. 110 Ft/km). Tipping: If a tip is not included in the bill, it is customary to give 10-15%. We advise you to use taxis operated by larger companies such as Citytaxi -- phone: 211-1111, Főtaxi -- phone: 322-2222, Taxi 2000 -- phone: 355-5000.

The official currency in Hungary is the Hungarian Forint (Ft or HUF). Foreign and Hungarian currency can be brought into or taken out of Hungary without restrictions. Currency exchange facilities are available at the airport, at major banks, in hotels and downtown. (At present one USD is approximately 240Ft, one Euro is 250 Ft, one DM is 130 Ft, and one FF is 40 Ft).

International credit cards (AmEx, EC/MC, Visa) are accepted in most hotels, including the conference hotels, larger restaurants and most department stores and shops, but you should check for the signs at the door. ATMs are available at the Airport and all over the city and most post offices accept postal cheques.

The climate in Hungary in July is usually warm and sunny with the the possibility of showers. The anaverage daily temperature is 25--30 C (77--86 F), sometimes even higher, and the relative humidity is below 50%. The evenings, however, might be cool, so you may find a pullover, a light coat.

In Hungary, electricity is suppplied at 220 V, 50 Hz. The 2-pin plug is different from those used in some other countries.

In case of problems upon arrival, feel free to call the numbers listed on our homepage for assistance.

Important data, schedule, detailed description of how to reach the conference site from the hotels can be obtained from our homepage (http://www.math-inst.hu/~erdos99). In case you have trouble reading our homepage, drop us an e-mail at erdos99@math-inst.hu and we shall keep you informed.
